Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. From 1957 the hospital operated a community extension service that provided information for and did initial screening of prospective patients. Community extension service case files provide a record of these initial contacts.
